AA self support

Postby Guest on Thu Nov 27, 2008 9:20 pm

A few topics.
I would like to talk about the principle of self supporting in AA. Does the buying of Books constitute the supporting of AA?
How does the group actually control the organization to which they belong, as is listed in the Service Manual.
Does the group have any" power of the purse", and how is that power effectively used.
thanks

IMHO, literature purchases through AA World Services directly and through "Service Structure" Channels like Intergroups constitute support for AA. I believe AA writ large should measure its total level of support including Literature Sales and Group Contributions.
However many copies are published, I don't think that unauthorized versions of the public domain 3rd Edition Big Book will ever form a threat to AA World Services from either a revenue standpoint or a dilution of message standpoint.
The "power of the purse" is the financial expression of the group conscience. While I personally believe that all groups should support the service structure with their literature "business" as well as their Group Support, groups can (obviously) patronize outside entities as they see fit.
