IMHO, literature purchases through AA World Services directly and through "Service Structure" Channels like Intergroups constitute support for AA. I believe AA writ large should measure its total level of support including Literature Sales and Group Contributions.
However many copies are published, I don't think that unauthorized versions of the public domain 3rd Edition Big Book will ever form a threat to AA World Services from either a revenue standpoint or a dilution of message standpoint.
The "power of the purse" is the financial expression of the group conscience. While I personally believe that all groups should support the service structure with their literature "business" as well as their Group Support, groups can (obviously) patronize outside entities as they see fit.
